Finding a Job the Old School Way – Old Job Hunting Tips that May Bring New Results

Did You Know that These Job Hunting Tips May Help You Land A Job And More?

Do you need help finding a job? If you’re a fresh graduate, the job hunting world may look new to you. Thankfully there are a myriad of tools that can help you land that job in line with your chosen field. However, although there are online techniques you can use to find your first job, you shouldn’t rely on them fully. You should be able to utilize other job hunting tips.

While everyone is busy sending in their resumes online, you can actually spend time away from the web and use these neglected methods in job hunting.

#1 – Networking

Oftentimes, it’s hard to be a fresh graduate. There will always be a person more experienced than you. That’s why it will be more challenging to get a job. However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t get a job. There are some who get the chance to get hired 1-2 months from graduation, while others have to wait at least 4-5 months. Don’t be one of those people. Do some networking.

What’s networking? Basically, instead of you finding work online or on your own, you get the help of others. Having more connections, they might be able to get you a job. For example, your parents might know someone who has their own company or you might have an uncle who can get you in their company. It’s worth a shot right? From there, you can widen your own network of friends and acquaintances in the future.

#2 – The Newspaper Way

The paper may not be as obsolete as you think. Although it’s better to use online classified ads rather than those found in the paper, you should shift your sights to other parts of the paper like the business section. It may be that you’re not interested in the news but you can just scan the section. Look for articles about certain companies. These may tell you whether or not you should be expecting them to expand in the future.

Always read between the lines and look to other sections! You never know—you might find your job in the most unexpected places. Besides that, you’ll also get to learn about current events, which can be a big factor in some jobs.

#3 – Create Your Own Job Hunting Strategy

Although you should listen to elders and those who have had experience in job hunting, never ever forget to try to make your own advice. Meaning, you don’t always have to listen to other people. Try out different job hunting strategies. What works for them might not work for you and vice versa.

You should also forget to take jobs because people tell you that what you want won’t create a stable future. Remember, if there’s a will, there’s a way. Just pursue the job you want and from there, you’ll find out your own answers. It’s better to have tried and failed than to never have tried ever at all.

Starbucks Coffee Barista Job – How To Land A Summer Job in Starbucks

Who Else Wants to be a Barista at Starbucks Coffee for the Summer?

It’s summer. Instead of going to the beach, some people would take the time to work and earn some extra cash. This is especially true for college students. One of their most popular choices for a summer job is becoming a Barista in places like Starbucks Coffee. This is probably one of the classiest part time jobs anyone can get for the summer.

So if you’re one of those hopefuls who wish to wear that Starbucks apron and serve world class tasting coffee, here are some tips.

  • First thing’s first! Starbucks requires its applicants to be at least 18 years old, a college student and should be fluent in English. They are also looking for confident, outdoing, enthusiastic and diligent individuals to work as a part of their staff. If you think you have all of these qualities, don’t hesitate to apply!
  • Next, go to any Starbucks Coffee establishment and talk to the branch manager. Here, they will give you instructions on how to go about your application. Also, grab an application form found in the condiment section of the coffee shop. Once you have done this, wait for their call.•
  • Because applying through random Starbucks branches and waiting for their call may take some time, some would recommend directly applying at the establishment’s main office in Sen. Gil Puyat/Buendia Ave., Makati (3/F Urban Building, Senator Gil Puyat Avenue).
  • People who do a walk-in application may get interviewed immediately. At some point, you will have to fill up a form which will require you to mention your preferred branch and schedule.
  • There are two interviews. The first one will be at the corporate office in Sen. Gil Puyat/Buendia ave. Whether or not you passed, you will receive a notice (on the same day). If you have, you shall proceed to the second interview with a certain branch manager.
  • Treat this as any job interview. Look presentable—since you’ll be getting the interview at the main office, wear corporate attire. You appearance will serve as you first impression. This will also be an indicator if you are determined enough to get the job.

If you’re willing to work as a barista at Starbucks Coffee this summer, make sure you get to polish your resume. Research on some of the most common job interview questions, so you can get a head start on what to expect. All in all, if you’re determined, it will show. Good luck!

Office Stereotypes

Get To Know The People You’re Bound To Work With In The Office

When you get to the office, there are certain people you’ll encounter for sure. They may be possible friends or may be your worst nightmare. Here are some of the office stereotypes you can face.

  1. The Suck-Up – It’s self-explanatory. There’s this person who will surely try their best to outsmart everyone by trying to impress the boss. It’s kind of like having a teacher’s pet. Some people who fall under this category don’t really mean to be annoying but they unconsciously let the title get to their heads.
  2. The Office Clown – There will always be a joker in the office. They make life better, especially when everyone’s in a foul mood. They love making you laugh, no matter what it takes. You find this one in any industry, for sure.
  3. The Foodie – Filipinos love food! With stress, they love to indulge in all its splendour. There will always be this one person in the office who always seem to have bundles of food in their bag. Thanks to them, even in the late hours of the day, you’ll never have an empty stomach.
  4. The Grump – Watch out for this fella. This person will always seem to be unreachable, especially with his short temper. Be careful not to cross paths with this guy or else, you’ll feel nothing but rage.
  5. The Geek-azoid – …a.k.a. the Walking Encylopedia; the Genius; the Expert on Everything… Also, they will exhibit the appearance of a stereotype geek: timid, silent and seemingly indifferent around tons of people. Although they’re soft-spoken, stick with them and you might actually learn a thing or two.
  6. The ‘Yosi’ Break Friend – When break time comes, it’s automatic. This person stands up with their cigarettes and lighters in hand, then disappear in about 15 minutes. If you work in a call center, you’ll definitely find one of these.
  7. The Gossip Source – Who says gossip only exists in the world of showbiz? Even offices have their own intrigues and mysteries and there will always be a nosy colleague who knows every little detail. Nothing really gets past them.
  8. The Heartthrob – There will always be one or two people who will make going to the office bearable because of their warm smile or their charm. Friend or no friend, they’re just great to have around—for inspiration purposes.
  9. The Early Bird – They’re so early it seems like they don’t even go home. Aside from being early, they will always have a perfect attendance. They will also have everything up and running for everyone. They aren’t only a good role model but they’re convenient to have around.
  10. The Late Comer – If there’s an early bird, there will always be a late comer. For sure, they will look disoriented when they enter the door.

Types of Filipino Bosses

When you’re working, it’s a certainty that you’ll face all sorts of bosses. They can help you work better or make your life hell. Just in case you’re going out of your mind trying to live with them, here’s a simple guide to the common types of bosses in the Philippine working world.

The Workaholic Robot

They live for work. They worship work. Just when you think they can’t do anything but work, you realize that you’re right. If you do a background check, it seems like they have lost their ability to socialize. Basically, it won’t hurt to have a boss like this. The only problem is you have to step up or you’ll be left behind.

The Angel

This is probably the best type of boss in the bunch—neither angry nor too kind. This person is born a leader—will manage the group well; will give you constructive criticisms, as well as compliments when you need them; and give you what’s due. This person is all about fair play. When you have this boss, just be thankful but don’t abuse them.

The “Anger Management” Patient

Brace yourself (and your ears), this type of boss will shout his/her way to getting things done. They might think that it’s to show authority but it just goes to show how impatient they are. When you’re stuck with this boss, it’s advisable to run. Unless he/she realize his/her faults, you and your colleagues will be imprisoned in a working nightmare.

The Inspiring Leader

He/she is someone who’s always positive. He/she always has ideas and plans to keep the group on their toes. Although this may seem encouraging, there are times when this can be bad. They can lay out a plan/get tired of it soon or can ask you to come in the office frequently at odd hours. When you have this boss, let your judgment help you—if this seems to be getting nowhere, get out.

The Detail Oriented Boss

Never lets anything out of their sight. One wrong move and you’re dead, while one good deed, well, for sure you won’t get anything—not even a compliment. They’re not evil. They’re just inexperienced with regards to showing gratitude. If you’re stuck with this boss, unless you have a patience of a saint, just work hard.

The Manipulative Monster

Beware. If you have this boss, get out ASAP. Not only will you be manipulated into doing things that you shouldn’t do, this boss doesn’t appreciate any kind of effort whatsoever from his/her teammates. He/she will always take the credit for himself/herself, while you struggle with the workload—crab mentality at its finest.

The “Inuman-Tayo” Boss

Although this person might seem cool, having a boss as a friend can be dangerous at times. Unless you’re sure that this person won’t use you to do his/her dirty work, then it’s fine. But for some unfortunate employees, their boss-friends tends to manipulate them into doing work for them and will make them guilty when they don’t. It’s bad. If you have a boss like this, keep your distance.

The IDIOT

These are the bosses which will make you say, “How the hell did he/she become a superior?” It happens. When you have this type of boss, just breathe. Consult your other bosses about work. These ‘idiots’ are there to test you and your patience. Don’t worry, your hard work will definitely not go unnoticed.
